The story behind Honolulu-Hawaii-Life.com
Aloha and welcome! You’ve come to this About Me page probably because you’re wondering who built this website and why?
I’m Lentina, the creator (and writer/photographer) of this website. I was born in Indonesia, and raised and educated in Singapore, and now I live in Honolulu, Hawaii (I know, lucky me!)
I created this site because I know there are many who want to further their education or relocate here for work, and there really isn’t any real and personal insider information available anywhere. I remember how excited and terrified I was as I prepared myself for my journey, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s afraid of the unknown, no matter how exotic and enticing Hawaii is.
Before I continue, let me just say for the record that I don’t have any professional ties to the travel or tourism industry, even though that was the reason I had come here in the first place (my degree is in Travel Industry Management). I had mistakenly believed that by working in the travel industry, I’d be traveling all the time. If only that was true…
I arrived on the shores of Oahu almost 10 years ago and I still remember how I felt that day, on August 15, 2001. What gorgeous weather! Sunny but not hot or humid. And the ocean and mountains! And the clear blue sky!
But... I wasn't impressed with the city. As a holiday destination, Honolulu is fabulous. But for a city girl like me who survives by public transportation and late-night entertainment, not so much!
Culture shock and homesickness made me anti-social. All I did everyday was go to school, come back to my room and grocery shopping. I was living like a hermit in one of the most beautiful places on Earth! How ‘fun’!
I had unrealistic expectations of Honolulu and it took me 2 semesters to adjust to the island pace and accept that living in a laidback place has its charm, and one more to understand the local pidgin, and to make friends.
Having gone through the misery, it is now my goal to help you ease into your new life in Honolulu as painlessly and smoothly as possible, by providing you with unbiased information (as much as possible) from a resident’s perspective, not from a Wikipedia or a travel site.
Fast forward 9 years… I am now a Mom to the most adorable and charming 15-month-old boy (I can be biased for this one) and wife to the most patient and supportive husband (and amazing photographer – the better-looking photographs on this site are his!).
It has been quite a journey, and I hope that you will find my guide helpful, and visit often for new developments and updates.
Wishing you the best of luck, and see you soon in Paradise!
